If you’ve been reading this site for any length of time, you’ll know that I travel a lot. And I travel with many electronics. One thing that I always have with me is my IOGEAR GearPower portable usb battery pack and I’ll tell you why.
What is the IOGEAR GearPower Battery Pack?
The GearPower is simply a battery pack. That’s it. You may think that’s pretty simplistic and that you can get any portable battery to do the trick, but I can assure you that that is not the case.
This USB power station can be used to charge almost any small electronics devices including Apple iPhones, Google Android phones, Windows phones, and even non-phone electronics. If your device can be charged through a USB cable, then it can be charged with the GearPower.
This battery power pack contains 2 USB charging ports which both have different outputs:
- 2.1 Amps
- 1.0 Amps
The 1.0 amp output is good for almost any phone. The 2.1 amp output is enough to charge a tablet or iPad. Those devices many times require a higher power output in order to charge the device.
The GearPower mobile battery pack comes in a variety of battery capacities. Which capacity you choose will determine how many times you can recharge your devices. It starts at 7,000mAh and goes all the way up to 16,000mAh.
If those numbers seem like gibberish to you, here’s a more concrete example. The 7,000mAh battery provides 2.7 full charges on an iPhone 6, while the 16,000mAh battery will provide 6.25 full charges on the same phone. You can see the differences in the table below.
|iPhone 6 Charges||6.25||4.6||4||3||2.7|
Why I Love This Device
I’m not kidding when I say that I love this phone battery pack. It literally goes with me on every single trip that I take. It is even on my packing checklist for a top priority thing to take.
Side note: Yes, I use checklists. It only took one international trip where I forgot all of my bathroom items to realize that I needed to make sure I took all the important things with me. I only wish I had started the checklist sooner as I now have about 8 pairs of cheap sunglasses.
I currently use the 12,000mAh battery and it works like a charm. No matter where I am traveling, I always use my phone. This battery lets me go for long periods of time without having to find an outlet to plug in and recharge.
My IOGEAR device came in particularly handy on my last trip to Japan. After a full day of sightseeing in Tokyo, my friends and I were headed back to Nagoya, which is where we were staying.
We had all been using our phones during the day to take pictures, get map directions, use Google translate, and yes, take selfies. By the time we got on the bullet train to head back south, our phones were dead.
Luckily, I had my mobile power pack in my backpack. I was able to pull it out and charge all 3 of our phones while we were sitting on the train.
In addition to our phones, we were using a WiFi hotspot while we were in Japan. It is so much cheaper than actually using a US cellphone plan in Japan. So after a full day of use, that hotspot was completely dead as well.
The hotspot charges with a USB cable, so I was able to plug it in and charge it as well. So not only did all of our phones get recharged, but we were able to surf the internet on the way back to the hotel by using the hotspot again.
This rechargeable battery pack has also come in so handy when I’m hiking too. I can use my phone for topography maps and use a tracking app to track my hikes and still take tons of pictures, and yes, selfies, and not have to worry about my cell phone dying.
I always have my battery pack with me so I can quickly charge my phone and keep going.
Some people may balk at the weight of the portable battery power. Mine is 0.6lbs. Honestly that’s pretty light considering it can keep my phone going for 5 days of constant use. I’m completely willing to carry that small bit of weight in my backpack in order to always have my phone in working condition.
Another great feature of this battery is that it can be recharged itself from USB. That means when I am traveling and I do actually find an outlet that I can use, I only need to use one to power up all of my devices.
I simply plug my laptop into the wall outlet and then plug the battery into the USB port on my laptop. Both charge simultaneously. I don’t need to bring extra cables because I already have the USB cable to charge my phone. So it is really a piece of cake.
I have used other external batteries before and they really did not hold up over time. What I mean by that is they would no longer charge my phone as many times as it would when it was new. That isn’t the case with this battery. I’ve had this for over a year now and I get just as much juice out of it now as I did when I bought it. It definitely is well built and the best portable power pack that I’ve owned.
If you are a frequent traveler or hiker, and use your phone to its full potential than buying one of these batteries is a no brainer. It will certainly be worth the weight and cost and I promise you will not regret the purchase!
